I WANT TO KNOW!

A musical re-enactment of the History of Science and Invention

I WANT TO KNOW is a 75-minute musical about the history of science and invention. Using comic book style speed and wit, the students chart the history of science, transportation, medicine, industry, and household gadgets. They learn about the tinkerers and thinkers that made it all happen. Starting in pre-history, when a shaman’s magic and herbal remedies formed the core of scientific study, I WANT TO KNOW moves through the ages, from Archimedes to Newton to Einstein and beyond, with humor and insight. Fast-paced and full of variety, the music carries the flavor of each scientific age and originating country.

  I WANT TO KNOW was developed in conjunction with the Wisconsin Arts Board Artist in Resident program. During a semester stay at Pulaski High School (Pulaski, WI), Tobin James Mueller developed the music, script and lyrics with the Student Drama Club.

Appropriate for grades 3-12; target grades for stage performance: 6-12.

From the flooding Nile

We devised a calender

With arithmatic
We learned to add and subtract,
For accounting well;
We can buy and sell.

In the ancient world,
With the dawn of math and art,
Moving like a wheel,
Civilization got its start.


Note: The modular nature of this script enables directors to cut entire scenes without affecting the over-all cohesion. The Teacher's Manual gives suggestions to make this show fit into 60 minute and 45 minute time frames, if so desired. The cast should be at least 14-18 students, although the flexible nature of the show, like all Center Stage Productions' shows, can be very large and include a wide range of ages.
